Pioneers Set Records and Advance in Win Over Jacks

Hailey Green and Gianna Bartalo set school records in kills and digs

OMAHA, NE --The Denver volleyball team totaled 83 kills en route to a five-set win (30-32, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 15-12) against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Thursday at Baxter Arena.

The out-of-conference victory moved the Pioneers' overall record to 19-11 on the season.

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from Memphis Glasgow, who registered 22 kills and 14 digs on the day. Hailey Green also added 32 kills to help the attack and Emma Ziegler contributed as well by serving up 68 assists. On the defensive end, Gianna Bartalo chipped in for with 40 digs to go with seven blocks from Brianna Green.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Pioneers couldn't hang on in a back-and-forth first set, losing 32-30 in a game that featured nine lead changes and was tied 25 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.

SET 2 | Denver responded to pick up a 25-22 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Pioneers never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that had just one lead change before the Pioneers took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | South Dakota State responded to win set number three, putting Denver in a two sets to one hole. The Pioneers couldn't persevere past a furious South Dakota State rally, falling 26-24 after leading by seven points at 17-10 earlier in the set.

SET 4 | Denver then responded to win set four 25-22 to force a fifth set. The Pioneers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 14 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way. The Pioneers win came in a stanza where 18 of their 25 points came via the kill.

SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Denver powered back to win sets four and five, culminating in a 15-12 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. The Pioneers took control of the set-five lead at 4-3 and never looked back. Denver led by as many as four points at 13-9 before closing out the set, totaling 12 kills .
