DENVER – Goaltender
Matt Davis stopped all 19 shots and five different Pioneers scored on Friday night as the No. 1 University of Denver hockey team defeated the Lindenwood University Lions 5-0 at Magness Arena.
Denver (15-4-0, 8-2-0 NCHC) extended its season-long winning streak to six games and has now won its last four contests at home. The team wraps up its two-game series against Lindenwood (4-11-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT in what will be DU's final contest before going on a two-week holiday break.
Davis had a fairly quiet night, seeing single-digit shot totals each stanza, but he was especially good early in the first period as LU opened the game with energy and had several quality looks. The Calgary, Alberta, native improved his record to 3-0-0 on the campaign and has won his last five starts dating back to last season.
"I know a shutout looks nice. It looks like a goalie stat, but in reality it's a team stat, especially in one like that where I honestly did not have to do much work,"
Davis said. "But it was great to see the boys compete out there."
Sophomore
Tristan Broz had a goal and an assist for the Pioneers, while junior defenseman
Mike Benning had a multi-point outing as well with a pair of helpers. Denver also received tallies from
Kyle Mayhew, Carter King, Carter Mazur and
Tristan Lemyre.
DU was without defensemen
Sean Behrens and
Shai Buium and forward
Jack Devine in the contest, as all three players attended USA Hockey's training camp this week for the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship
"We were missing three regulars, and it was a great job by the other guys to step in and get minutes," said Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach
David Carle. "It gives the group confidence with our depth. I thought just overall we really matured and didn't allow a lot of options for them. That doesn't mean that they didn't have pushes and get some opportunities. We limited the second-chance opportunities, and a lot of that was Matty."
The Pioneers outshot the Lions 34-19 overall, as LU goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 29 saves.
DU went 1-for-4 on the power play in the outing, with Mayhew tallying the lone man-advantage marker to open the game's scoring at 12:51 of the first period.
In the second frame, Broz tallied early in the stanza and King scored late to extend the Pios' lead to 3-0 entering final period. Mazur netted his 15th goal of the season—tied for the most in the country—3:29 into the third before Lemyre tallied his first collegiate marker 3:03 later.
This weekend marks the first-ever series between Denver and Lindenwood, which is in its first season at the NCAA Division-I level. The teams did face off in an exhibition contest prior to last year when the Lions were an ACHA club.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle
On Matt Davis getting the start in goal: "He was really good in his last start. It's no secret that Magnus (Chrona) is a senior. You know, just trying to give Matty a chance. We let him know on Tuesday morning that he would be getting the start, so he had the opportunity to think through the week that he was going to be the guy on Friday."
On the team's defense: "In the second half I thought we had some really good gaps. Our forwards tracked back to the house really well too. We had some things that maybe looked dangerous but weren't because we were there. We never got out-manned or out-willed in our zone. A lot of that was because we had a lot of people there. It was good, but it got better through the night."
Goaltender Matt Davis
On communicating with the defensemen: "It's really the same thing, you always want to communicate out there whether they are new or not. Of course there are some other guys that are more comfortable and confident out there, but that just means that they have to be better at communicating with the other guys too."
On the defensemen: "You always know what you are going to get with
Justin Lee. He's one of those guys that comes out and battles; he's going to be good in the zone and protect his own house. He's going to do everything that you need to win.
Kyle Mayhew has been unbelievable this season; his offensive game has really taken off. His skating is incredible, he's able to really adjust and get back defensively.
Lane Krenzen hopping in tonight, I thought he did well. Also, our freshmen Andy (
Kent Anderson) and Oly (
Lucas Olvestad), they both had good nights too."
Defenseman Kyle Mayhew
On being paired with freshman Lucas Olvestad: "He's been playing great. He's been making huge strides in practice the last few weeks, and I've taken him under my wing. I love playing with him."
On some players getting more ice time tonight: "It's a bit of that, but it's a consistency thing. Injuries or whatever are going to happen. You need guys to come into the lineup like they did tonight, and if they need to make an impact they can do it. It's a great sign for us."
