Minett Secures Double-Double in Denver's Loss to Oral Roberts

TULSA, Oklahoma --Makayla Minett secured a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 88-70 on the road Saturday.

The Pioneers (5-8, 1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Minett, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Emma Smith added 16 points and two steals and Mary Wilson helped out with 12 points.

Denver grabbed 41 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Oral Roberts' 28, led by Minett's 16 boards. The Pioneers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 20 rebounds into 18 second chance points.

The Denver defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Oral Roberts turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's two steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.

How It Happened

Denver started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a three from Smith, to take an early lead with 8:13 left in the first quarter. Oral Roberts then responded to tie things up at 23-23 heading into the second quarter. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 23 points.

Oral Roberts then took a 31-27 lead before Denver responding by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Minett, to take a 32-31 lead. The Golden Eagles then came roaring back to take a 48-35 lead heading into halftime.

Oral Roberts continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 62-48 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 62-54 with 3:00 to go in the third. Oral Roberts countered and stretched its lead to 74-54 heading into the fourth. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.

Oral Roberts kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 88-63 advantage before Denver went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Minett's layup, to shrink the deficit to 88-70 with 26 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
