DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped a 62-50 game to Omaha on Saturday afternoon inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
Inside the Box Score:
Cheyenne Forney led the Pioneers with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Uju Ezeudu had 12 points, Denver's other double figure scorer on the afternoon.
First Quarter:
Omaha got out to an early 6-5 lead. After singing the national anthem pregame, Ezeudu connected on the first bucket of the afternoon to kickstart Denver's offense.
Indeya Sanders connected on Denver's first triple of the day to give Denver an early lead at 5-2 before Omaha got the next four heading into the first-quarter break.
Omaha broke a 7-7 deadlock with a triple, but a couple key buckets from Forney down the stretch and an
Anna Jackson triple sent Denver into the second quarter with a 12-10 lead.
Second Quarter:
Omaha opened the quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 19-16 lead at the media timeout. Forney continued to be a spark for Denver's offense, getting another put back off a missed shot from the perimeter in the early stages of the second.
Another Forney layup pulled Denver back within one at 19-18, but Omaha ended the half on an 8-2 run to stretch its lead to 27-20 at the intermission.
Forney had eight points to go with four rebounds in the first half. Jackson added five.
Third Quarter:
Santos banked in a running jumper at the shot-clock horn and Ezeudu hit a left-wing triple on the next possession, but the Mavericks stretched their lead to 10 at 35-25 at the media timeout.
Denver used a 7-0 run on the other side of the media, capped by an
Emily Counsel deep triple to cut the Omaha lead to three at 35-32, forcing an Omaha timeout.
Omaha scored the next five out of its timeout, forcing a Denver timeout with the Mavs up 40-32.
The Mavericks lead stayed at eight to end the quarter. Five different players scored in the quarter for the Pioneers, led by four more from Forney to bring her total to 12.
Fourth Quarter:
Back-to-back buckets from Ezeudu closed the Omaha lead to five, but the Pioneers couldn't get closer than that to give the Mavericks the road victory.
Notes:
- Cheyenne Forney finished in double figures for the fourth time this season and the fourth time in her career.
- Uju Ezeudu finished in double figures for the 11th-straight game, the 25th time this season and the 59th time in her career.
What's Next:
Denver will continue its regular-season ending three-game homestand on Thursday night when the Pioneers welcome St. Thomas to Hamilton Gymnasium. Tip is set for 7 p.m. MT.
