BERKELEY, Calif. – The No 15-ranked Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team used an eight-goal run in the second half to pull away and defeat the California Golden Bears 15-5 on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium to stay undefeated in the 2022 season.
DU improved to 3-0 on the campaign after winning both games in Northern California this weekend, starting with an 8-6 come-from-behind victory at No. 14 Stanford on Friday night. Denver begins a four-game homestand next Friday at Peter Barton Stadium against Ohio State.
The Pioneers were once again led by graduate student
Bea Behrins, who buried five goals on nine shots while adding an assist and picking up two groundballs versus Bears. Behrins finished the two games in the Bay Area with eight goals and three assists.
Freshman
Caroline Colimore and junior
Julia Gilbert each posted hat tricks as well on Sunday, with Colimore pitching in with four total markers for her first career hatty. Freshman
Lauren Black had two goals and an assist and junior
Charlotte Boote also scored for the Pioneers.
Freshman goalkeeper
Emelia Bohi made five saves in the contest, including stopping four free-positions shots by the Bears.
Denver buried each of its first four shots of the outing, with Black opening the scoring with her sixth goal of the season just 40 seconds after the opening draw before Gilbert added two and Behrins the other in the early run.
Amanda Morse tallied for Cal with 5:11 remaining in the opening frame, but Denver went on to tally three straight markers before the Bears could find the back of the cage again.
DU led 7-3 at halftime and didn't let up in the second half as it held Cal off the scoreboard for 30:30 of game time. The Pioneers' defense didn't allow another goal until 1:44 left in regulation when Liz Scott scored her second of three in the game and her first of two in the closing two minutes of play.
Behrins tallied three times during that the Pios' eight-goal run in the second half, with Colimore also potting three goals in the stretch to finish with a career-high four markers.
Denver finished with a 30-9 edge in shots on goal and won 12-of-23 draw controls and 26-of-39 groundballs.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers return to Denver and begin a season-long four-game homestand on Friday at 1 p.m. MT against Ohio State at Peter Barton Stadium. DU will also play UC Davis on March 4 and Vanderbilt on March 6 before closing the home stretch against defending national champion Boston College on March 9.
