LUBBOCK, Texas– The [54] University of Denver men's tennis team got singles wins against nationally ranked players from
James Davis and
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta, but the Pioneers fell to [28] Tulsa 4-2 on Friday night at the Falls Athletic Club.
Doubles:
Denver dropped both court two and court three by a count of 6-2 to give Tulsa the doubles point, while the Pioneers No. 1 doubles pair of Davis and
Matt Summers held a 5-4 lead.
Singles:
It took three sets, but Davis was the first to finish on Friday night, defeating 92
nd-ranked Kody Pearson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. With the win, Davis improved to 5-2 overall, including 4-2 in Denver's top spot in the lineup.
Tulsa retook the lead at 2-1 with a three-set win on court four after
Mattia Ros took the first set in the match 6-2.
Herrero Cuesta evened things up at 2-2 with a three-set win of his own, coming from a set down to defeat 99
th-ranked Ezequiel Santalla 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. The Denver sophomore is now 7-1 on the season.
A tight first-set breaker proved the difference on court three as
Matt Summers took it the distance but fell 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4. Tulsa wrapped up the match on four five with a straight-set win.
