OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 3 Denver Pioneers hockey team fell 5-1 to the Omaha Mavericks on Friday night at Baxter Arena.
Omaha (20-13-0, 10-11-0 NCHC) scored the game's first four goals and received a 31-save effort from goaltender Isaiah Saville to extend its winning streak to three games. Denver (22-8-1, 15-6-0 NCHC) had won five of the previous 10 meetings against UNO (5-2-3).
Senior
Ryan Barrow scored the lone goal for DU with assists from freshmen
Massimo Rizzo and
Shai Buium at 1:38 of the third period. Goaltender
Magnus Chrona stopped 22 shots.
Junior forward
Bobby Brink was held off the scoresheet for the first time since Dec. 11, ending a career-long 14-game point streak (7g/21a). It was the longest consecutive point stretch by a Pioneer since Danton Heinen had an 18-game streak from Jan. 22-March 27, 2016 (14g/20a). Brink continues to lead the country in scoring with 49 points (13g/36a).
Fifth-year senior
Cameron Wright appeared in his 175th career game, believed to be just the 27th player in D-I college hockey history to reach the milestone. He spent the previous four seasons with Bowling Green State University and leads Denver in goals this year with 18.
Ty Mueller scored twice for Omaha, while Cameron Berg (three) and Jack Randl both contributed multiple assists. Mueller opened the scoring 4:54 into the first period and the Mavericks stretched their lead 3-0 by the intermission after registering markers on their first two power-play opportunities of the game.
UNO went 2-for-5 on the power play, while DU didn't capitalize on any of its five chances.
Kirby Proctor stretched the Mavericks lead to four with 4:18 left in the second period and Jimmy Glynn scored into an empty net with 32.4 seconds to play.
