Denver Tops North Dakota State 62-48

Boyd, Ezeudu and Forney finished in double figures to lead the Pioneers

DENVER  – The University of Denver women's basketball team's got back in the win column with a 62-48 win over North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Meghan Boyd led the Pioneers with 17 points that included a 7-for-8 day at the foul-line. Uju Ezeudu chipped in 13 points to go with nine rebounds. Cheyenne Forney reached double-figures in back-to-back games with 11 and five boards. Makayla Minett continued her impressive season on the glass as well, pulling down 14 to go with six points and a career-high seven blocks that was good for the third-highest in Denver's Division I history.
 
Denver never trailed and held the lead for 38:54 in the contest, getting up and down the floor all afternoon with 16 fast break points.
 
First Quarter:
Boyd had eight points in the early going to kick-start Denver's offense and force a North Dakota State timeout with the Pios up 15-6 and under five minutes to play on the first quarter clock. Boyd scored Denver's last four points of the quarter to push Denver's lead to 19-8 through 10 minutes of play in Hamilton.
 
Denver made three of its first four triples and converted on all six trips to the line in the first 10. Boyd wasted no time getting back in double figures, scoring 12 to go with four rebounds and an assist in the first stanza.
 
Second Quarter:
Forney was the story of the second quarter for the Pioneers, scoring all 11 of her first-half points in the second 10 minutes on 4-of-5 shooting to go with four rebounds in 7:27 of the frame. Denver went on a 8-0 run over a span of 3:58 to separate themselves further from the Bison, a spurt that included six from Forney and a pair from Minett.
 
Minett added another four as the Pioneers pushed their halftime advantage to 14 at 35-21.
 
Third Quarter:
A 9-2 run from North Dakota State late in the third quarter pulled the visitors back to within five at 41-36 with 1:28 to play, but a triple from Tess Santos and a free-throw from Indeya Sanders made it a nine-point game heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
Fourth Quarter:
The nation's leader in free-throws made and free-throws attempted entering the weekend did her thing in the final 10 minutes, drawing five fouls and converting on 5-of-6 from the line in the fourth to help the Pioneers stretch their lead to the final margin of 14.
 
Sanders had five in the four quarter as well, and Santos hit the Pioneers only three in the final stanza.
 
Notes:
  • Meghan Boyd finished in double figures for the 14th time this season and the 41st time in her career.
  • Cheyenne Forney finished in double figures for the second straight game and for the third time in her career.
  • Uju Ezeudu finished in double figures for the eighth-straight game, the 22nd time this season and the 56th time in her career.
    • Ezeudu's 13 points moved her past Sara Benham for 13th in Denver's Division I history with 1,063 points. Next Up: Claire Gritt, 1,068 points.
  • Makayla Minett finished in double figures in rebounds for the second-straight game, the fifth time this season and the sixth time in her career.
    • Minett's seven blocked shots tied for the third most in a game in Denver's Division I history.
  • Indeya Sanders finished with 5+ assists for the second-straight game, the ninth time this season and the 31st time in her career. 
What's Next:
Denver will hit the road next weekend, starting with a trip to South Dakota State Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.
