DENVER – The No. 12 Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team remained undefeated on the season and won its 20th consecutive home game on Friday afternoon in a 13-4 victory over UC Davis at Peter Barton Stadium.
Junior
Ellie Curry scored a career-high four goals for Denver and freshman
Lauren Black joined her with a hat trick, her second game of the season with a trio of tallies. Graduate student
Bea Behrins and junior
Julia Gilbert both scored twice, while
Charlotte Boote and
Carolina Colimore also hit the back of the cage.
DU, which improved to 5-0 on the campaign, allowed a season-low four goals against and has now kept all five of its opponents to single digit markers this year. The Pios forced 21 turnovers and led 18-15 ground balls, 12-9 on draw controls and had 27-of-28 successful clears.
Junior
Sam Thacker headed the Denver defense with a game-high and career-best five caused turnovers, while also adding four draw controls and three ground balls. Sophomore
Abby Jenkins also won four draw controls and senior
Gracie DeRose grabbed three ground balls.
Freshman goalkeeper
Emelia Bohi made five saves before giving way in the fourth quarter to junior
Victoria Macres, who played the final 9:40 and stopped 3-of-4 shots in her season debut in net.
The Pioneers began the game on a 3-0 run, with Curry opening the scoring just 86 seconds after the first draw. Gilbert and Behrins also found twine before Kendall Seifert scored for the Aggies (2-1) with 3:28 left in the quarter.
Denver tacked on four more goals in the second frame, with Curry completing the hat trick at 4:15. Mia Lawrence scored in the final 10 seconds for Davis to make it a 7-2 contest at halftime.
DU's defense didn't allow a shot on goal in the third quarter, while its offense went on another four-goal run. Regan Arkless and Lauren Hart began the fourth period with markers for the Aggies, but the Pios closed the outing with Curry scoring her fourth at 5:33 and Black completing the hat trick with 3:41 remaining.
The Pioneers finished 3-for-5 on free position shots, while the Aggies were 1-for-6. DU outshot UC Davis 37-16 overall in the contest.
UP NEXT: Denver resumes its two-game weekend on Sunday when it faces No. 16 Vanderbilt at 12 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Stadium. It will be the third outing of a four-game homestand, which concludes on Wednesday against No. 1 Boston College (4 p.m. MT).
