No. 11 Pioneers Fall 9-5 to No. 1 Boston College in Frigid Temperatures

Game called after the third quarter due to 2-degree windchill

DENVER – The No. 11 Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team fell 9-5 to the No. 1 Boston College Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium in a game that was called after three quarters due to cold temperatures.

Snow fell throughout the contest and it was 17 degrees Fahrenheit at first draw, but the on-field temperature with the wind chill made it feel like 3 degrees. The game became official after three quarters.

The Pioneers (6-1) held the Eagles (7-0) scoreless in the third quarter, marking the first time this season that the 2021 NCAA national champion failed to find the back of the net in a period.

Wednesday's contest marked the first time that Denver hosted a No. 1 team in the nation and a reigning national champion at Peter Barton Stadium. The Pios were playing a No. 1-ranked team for the first time since May 19, 2019 when they fell 17-8 at Maryland in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Senior attacker Kayla DeRose scored twice for DU, while graduate students Bea Behrins and Sammie Morton and junior Charlotte Boote also tallied. Freshman Lauren Black had two assists in the outing, and goalkeeper Emelia Bohi made three saves.

BC was led by Charlotte North, the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner as the best women's lacrosse player in the country, who had four goals and also added an assist in the outing. Jenn Medjid also had a hat trick for the Eagles.

The teams were tied 2-2 after the first quarter, as DeRose scored both of the Pioneers' goals before Boston College tallied four unanswered to begin the second, taking a 6-2 lead.

Morton stopped the run at 7:07 of the period after winning a draw control and taking the ball all the way into the offensive end before scoring, but Medjid and North tallied in a matter of a minute of one another to extend the Eagles' lead to five soon after.

Boote scored her second of the game with 3:05 remaining before halftime and Behrins tallied her 20th of the season with 71 seconds left to get the Pios' within three. However, a failed clear led to Medjid tallying for the third time on the afternoon in the closing seconds of the first half.

Denver's defense had a strong third frame as it denied each of the Eagles' four shots. The Pios grabbed seven-of-12 ground balls in the quarter and were able to force several turnovers, but they weren't able to translate those opportunities into points in transition.

DU finished with an 18-11 edge in ground balls and was successful in 17-of-19 clears. BC led 18-11 in shots and scored on three of its seven free-position chances.

It was the Pioneers' first loss at home since falling 12-10 on Feb. 26 2019 versus Michigan, ending a 21-game win streak at Peter Barton Stadium.

UP NEXT: Denver heads out for its third road game of the season this weekend as it plays at No. 8 Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT. It will be the start of a stretch where DU will play four of five away from Peter Barton Stadium. The Pioneers next play at home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. MT when they host Fairfield.
