DENVER – Defenseman
Kyle Mayhew is returning to the University of Denver hockey program for a fifth season of eligibility, Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle announced on Thursday.
Mayhew, 24, appeared in 40-of-41 games during the 2021-22 season, recording career highs in goals (2), assists (9) and points (11) while helping the Pioneers win the program's record-tying ninth national championship. His plus-16 rating was also a personal best and his 43 blocked shots ranked second on the squad.
The Anaheim Hills, California, native began the season with a career-long three-game point streak (1g/3a from Oct. 8-15), his first of two such stretches in 2021-22 (also Dec. 4-11). He recorded multiple points in two contests during the year, registering one goal and one assist in both the season opener on Oct. 8 versus Arizona State and on March 4 at Colorado College. Mayhew blocked three or more shots in six games, including tying for the team high of four on three occasions.
Appearing in his 100th career game on March 12 versus Minnesota Duluth, Mayhew has 22 points (4g/18a), a plus-31 rating and 62 penalty minutes in 113 career games with the Pioneers. He has been named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in all four of seasons at Denver (2018-2022)
Mayhew joined DU in 2018-19 after spending the previous two seasons in the North America Hockey League. He recorded 49 points (8g/41a) in 84 games with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and two assists in 10 contests with the Aberdeen Wings.
Mayhew gained an extra year of eligibility through the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
