NEWTON, Mass. – The Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team fell 13-8 to No. 3 overall seed Boston College on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Newton Campus Field.
Graduate student
Bea Behrins led DU with five points on three goals and two assists and recorded a team-high six shots in her final game in crimson and gold.
Sophomore
Sloane Kipp joined Behrins with a multi-goal performance with two tallies, and freshman
Lauren Black, senior
Kayla DeRose and freshman
Raegan Wilson all contributed a marker and a helper as well. Denver goalkeepers
Emelia Bohi and
Victoria Macres both saw action.
The Pioneers outshot the Eagles 26-17 and forced BC to turn the ball over 22 times. Denver also finished the contest with more ground balls (14-8) and caused turnovers (12-5).
DU and BC traded goals throughout the outing, as the longest run that either squad was able to produce was two goals. The Eagles, the 2021 NCAA national champions, scored four of their goals on free-position shots.
Boston College led 8-5 at halftime and took a 9-5 lead 2:11 into the third quarter. That marker came after Jenn Medjid's shot hit the outside of the net, but the on-field officials ruled it a goal even after conferring with one another.
Denver cut the deficit to 10-7 and 11-8 in the fourth quarter on goals from Black, Wilson and Behrins but couldn't get any closer. BC added two more tallies in the final 2:30.
The Eagles tallied the game's first two goals, with both coming from Charlotte North. The first marker by North was the 342nd of her career, setting a new NCAA record. The reigning Tewaaraton Award winner finished with five points (four goals, one assist).
Behrins scored her first at 5:59 of the first frame, but BC added two more markers to take a 4-1 lead early in the second. Denver responded with tallies from DeRose and Kipp to make it a one-goal contest at 4-3, but that was as close as the Pioneers got.
Medjid officially finished with three goals and one assist for the Eagles, while teammate Caitlyn Mossman also recorded a hat trick. Boston College goalkeeper Rachell made eight-of-16 saves.
Sunday's game marked the final one for grad students
Behrins and defender
Sammie Morton. Behrins closes her college career with a DU-record 82 games played, while her 199 goals rank as the second-most in program history and her 258 career points coming in as the third-most. Behrins' 71 goals this season are the most ever by a Pioneer in a single campaign, and her 96 points in 2022 finish as the fourth-most.
Morton played in her 76th career game on Sunday, tied for fourth all-time in program history.
The Pioneers were in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season and have made it to at least the second round in each of their six trips.
