Frost’s Penalty Kick Gives Denver 1-1 Draw at San Jose State

McGowan draws penalty in 86th minute, converted by fellow sophomore Frost to draw Denver even

SAN JOSE, California – The University of Denver women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at San Jose State on Thursday off an 86th-minute penalty kick converted by sophomore Ella Frost.

It was Frost's first goal of 2022, her first penalty kick and the third goal of her career.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "We started the game so lackluster, and they were a good enough team to take advantage of that. It's 100 degrees, you're own the road, and you're trying to battle back. The later the game went on, the more I felt SJSU tried to protect the lead, and we knocked at the door a few times. And then Delaney (McGowan) and Riley (Baker) went up the right side there with a little combination play, and Delaney put herself in a great spot. She's had two games now coming back from injury and had some bright moments and in this case, she drew the penalty. It was a good way to finish. We tried to push and get the second one, but we're going to have to be content with the tie at end of the day."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:

  • Frost's equalizer at 85:01 was the ninth in Denver's Division I history to come in the final five minutes of regulation and the first since Camryn MacMillan's 90th-minute goal against UC Riverside on September 26, 2019.
  • The equalizer was also Denver's first from a penalty kick since August 23, 2013, when Nicholette DiGiacomo also tied up the match at 1-1 with a converted penalty in the 73rd minute against Colorado College.
  • DU had nine shots in the first half, matching its season high (also nine against San Diego on August 18), and finished with 14 shots in the match, a new season's best.
  • For the third time this season, Denver held its opponent without a corner kick.
  • Freshman Isabella Chidiac and junior Taylor Wells made their first appearances of the season with Chidiac's marking her collegiate debut.

FIRST HALF:
6' | SJSU's Tatiana Cunningham gave the Spartans the early 1-0 lead after bouncing the ball through the box and past graduate student Nerea Arrazola.

25' | Arrazola made her third save of the match, bumping the ball out of mid-air before gaining full possession of it on the goal line.

43' | Junior McKenna Dannenhauer logged her third shot in as many minutes – including one on goal – after entering the match in the 28th minute.

45' | Chidiac closed the half with the first shot of her career, aiming for the upper right corner of the net but had the ball saved by San Jose State keeper Shayla Sugai.

SECOND HALF:
66' | Sophomore Jadyn Goodrich headed the ball off a cross from Wells but didn't have enough pace to get it past the keeper.

73' | Wells again looked for a teammate with a cross, delivering the ball to MacMillan, who directed the ball on target where SJSU's Sugai made the save.

86' | Sophomores Riley Baker and Delaney McGowan tag teamed an attack down the right side of the field before McGowan was fouled inside the penalty area. Frost took the kick – Denver's first of the season – and converted to even up the match at 1-1.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (2-3-2) returns to its home state with a trip up I-25 to Colorado State on Sunday, September 11 at 3 p.m. MT.
