Tristan Broz Scores Four Goals in Pioneers' 7-0 Shutout of Miami

Forward becomes first player in 20 years to accomplish the feat; Magnus Chrona posts consecutive clean sheets

DENVER – A big second period, a hat trick and a 7-0 shutout from goaltender Magnus Chrona highlighted the University of Denver hockey team's victory for the second consecutive night, as the No. 4 Pioneers swept the weekend series against the Miami RedHawks on Saturday at Magness Arena.

"I liked our game again tonight. It was probably more complete than it was last night," said Richard and Kitzia Goodman hockey head coach David Carle. "Without the puck I didn't think we gave up as much. I thought the kill was better, power play was better, and Magnus was really good when called upon … Really good all-around performance all weekend long."

Sophomore Carter King recorded his first career three-goal game in Friday's victory, and fellow classmen Tristan Broz matched that performance on Saturday and then some. Broz's first career multi-marker game came via a four-goal performance—the first one by a Denver player in nearly 20 years.

Broz becomes the 31st Pioneer to tally four or more times in a contest in program history, as Kevin Doell was the last to do it on Feb. 21, 2003 versus Michigan Tech. The Bloomington, Minnesota, native scored on each of his four shots in the contest.

"Just good plays by teammates. I'm surrounded by so many talented hockey players and amazing people," Broz said. "They make it so easy to play the game, so a lot of credit to them."

Chrona stopped 20 shots for the second-straight night and earned his third shutout of the season—which have all come versus the RedHawks. Chrona is on a season-long 130:09 shutout streak and owns a 151:15 streak against Miami that dates back to Oct. 29.

Overall, it was the Swedish netminder's 12th career shutout, moving him into a tie with Adam Berkhoel (2000-2004) for third-place all-time in school history.

Chrona received offensive help with 11 different players reaching the scoresheet and six having multi-point outings. Senior Casey Dornbach, sophomore Sean Behrens and freshman Rieger Lorenz each contributed a goal and an assist in the contest, while Aidan Thompson had three assists, Shai Buium registered two helpers and senior Brett Edwards contributed a pair of apples.

Just like in Friday's win, Denver broke open a 0-0 stalemate after the first period with several early markers in the middle frame. DU scored four goals in the first 8:36 on Saturday after tallying five times in 6:59 the night before.

Broz's final three goals all came in the third period, with him scoring his hat-trick marker with 3:12 left in regulation before depositing his fourth of the night 45 seconds later. His three consecutive markers came in a matter of 6:57, the second-fastest three goals by a Denver player since 1999. Only Rhett Rakhshani's three tallies in 5:21 on Dec. 8, 2007 vs. St. Cloud State have come faster in the last 24 years.

The similarities between the two nights continued in the shot total as well, with the Pioneers holding a 39-20 edge in that category for the second-straight game.

Denver finished 3-for-7 on the power play and has now scored on the man advantage in eight straight contests—a season long streak. The Pios went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill have also extinguished 11 consecutive penalties, which is also a season-best run.

UP NEXT: After spending almost two months entirely at home, Denver heads back on the road next weekend. The Pioneers will travel to Minnesota to play the No. 3 St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday and Saturday in a likely top-five matchup. The Pios and Huskies split their set on Nov. 4-5 at Magness Arena when DU was No. 2 and St. Cloud was No. 4.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • Denver has now won 10 straight games over Miami and is 30-13-9 in the all-time series. The Pios are now 16-1-0 in the last 17 contests and 21-3-3 in the past 27 outings against the RedHawks.
  • The last time DU posted consecutive shutouts in a weekend series was last season when it defeated Colorado College 5-0 and 4-0 on Jan. 21-22, 2022 during a home-and-home set.
  • Tristan Broz's four goals are the most this season by an NCHC player. He scored on each of his four shots in the game.
  • Broz's four points tied a team season high for a single game and matched his personal career high from Dec. 17 vs. Lindenwood (1g/3a).
  • Broz's three goals in the third period were the most in a single frame this season, while his three points in the stanza tied a season-best mark on the Pioneers.
  • Broz tallied his second game-winning goal of the season and the third of his career.
  • Three different DU players have hat tricks on the season and all of which have been against Miami. Carter Mazur recorded his first career three-goal contest in the first meeting of the year on Oct. 28 in Oxford, Ohio, and Carter King scored three times on Friday night vs. the RedHawks.
  • Massimo Rizzo extended his career-long point streak to 11 games with an assist (6g/8a).
  • Senior Brett Edwards (0g/2a) and freshman Rieger Lorenz (1g/1a) each recorded their first career multi-point games.
  • Aidan Thompson had a career-high three assists/points.
  • Justin Lee blocked a career-high seven shots.
  • The Pioneers scored their third goal of the season with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker (this instance was in the third period during a delayed penalty).

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach David Carle
On Tristan Broz's development: "He is a really fast player. We saw it on the goal where he drove by. You thought he might have to fight off a check to get to the net, but he just blew past a guy and really showcased his speed. That's the player that we watched in Fargo (in the USHL), the player we are starting to see more regularly. As we talked about last night, the challenge is to see that consistently, shift-to-shift, game-to-game. It's a process. These kids are young. They are not perfect every night, so it's working with them. It is good to see growth in his game."

On scoring 10 goals in the second periods this weekend: "It has not happened as much this season (compared to last year). Obviously it happened this weekend, so hopefully that is a good sign for what's to come. It is a period where you can take advantage of the long change. Our changes are shorter in the offensive zone. We are changing before we are tired, and I thought that happened throughout the weekend. So that was really positive development."

Sophomore Forward Tristan Broz
On the depth of the team: "I'm not really surprised at all honestly. I think the second I got here (at Denver) it was easy to tell there are so many good hockey players, and they are amazing people. It makes going to the rink fun every day, it's a special place."

On three straight games with seven goals after the loss to Alaska: "I've always known we kind of have that resolve. I mean obviously that was a stinker one, the first game against Alaska. We have a lot of character in the room and that shows up. Magnus (Chrona) is a stud, and it gives you a lot of confidence going out there and knowing that he is backstopping you. We could clean up some of those chances, but it is a good feeling knowing he is back there in case things break down."

Senior Goaltender Magnus Chrona
On the 7-0 wins both night: "I believe that we followed our game plan and stuck with it. Even though we did not score both of the first periods, we stuck with it and did our game plan. Fourteen goals are not bad for a weekend."

On the team's play recently: "I will say that we are a confident group, especially right now. It is a big test for us next weekend, coming in and playing on Olympic ice against St. Cloud. I think it will be really fun for us and we are very excited."
