SNOWBIRD, Utah – Freshman
Jack Bowers earned a pair of top-five results on Friday in men's slalom to the help the Denver Pioneers ski team finish second at the Westminster Invitational at Snowbird Resort.
The men closed the two-day, alpine-only meet by recording 121 points, giving Denver 302 overall and 34 more than third-place Westminster College and 51 more than fourth-place Colorado. The women competed in two slalom events on Thursday to open the first alpine RMISA events of the season.
Making his collegiate racing debut, Bowers finished fifth in both men's slalom races on Friday. He clocked in at 1:29.57 in the morning before totaling 1:35.40 in the afternoon competition.
Utah's Wilhelm Normannseth won both races (1:27.74, 1:33.53), with teammate Oliver Parazette coming in second and CU's Jacob Dilling placing third in the morning session. In the second race, Westminster's Mikkel Solbakken (second) and the Buffaloes' Filip Forejtek (third) joined Normannseth on the podium
DU freshman
Thomas Hoffman scored for DU in both races—also his first on the college circuit—coming in 15th in the morning (1:30.67) before finishing just 12-hundredth of a second outside the top 10 in 11th place in the second event (1:36.42).
Sophomore
Cooper Cornelius was the third scorer for the Pioneers in 33rd in the first slalom, while freshman
Adrian Minde Hunshammer placed 14th in the second event. Hunshammer, who was also making his collegiate debut after joining the team in January, used the second-fastest second run to move up from 29th after his initial descent down the hill.
UP NEXT: The DU alpiners now head up to Montana and Bridger Bowl Ski Area in Bozeman to wrap up the Montana State Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday. Men's and women's giant slalom races are scheduled for both days, with the Pioneers presently in fifth place following the Nordic-portion of the meet on Jan. 13-14.
SCHEDULE UPDATE: The alpine races of the MSU Invite were each pushed back a day due to extreme cold in the forecast on Monday. The GS races were supposed to take place on Monday and Tuesday but will now be on Tuesday and Wednesday due to obvious safety reasons.
NOTES
- Jack Bowers had the second-fastest second run in the first race. Each of his four runs on the day placed inside the top 10.
