Montana State Invitational Alpine Races Canceled

Giant slalom events will be attempted to be made up later in the season

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The two days of alpine events for the Montana State Invitational at Bridger Bowl Ski Area was canceled on Tuesday due to weather and poor snow conditions. The two days of races will be attempted to be made up later on in the season.

After extreme cold temperatures pushed the start of the alpine competition back a day, Tuesday's race was unable to be completed after the women finished their first run, which began at 10 a.m. MT. The men, who were set to start at 11 a.m. MT, weren't able to begin racing.

Since the women were able to complete one run, those results do count as an official college race and also count for qualification purposes for the 2023 NCAA Championships. Two Denver skiers were in the top 10 as senior Galena Wardle was fifth (50.01) and freshman Sara Rask was sixth (50.44). Senior Eleri Smart placed 18th, freshman Mia Hunt was 19th and freshman Josephine Trueblood was 22nd, while junior Nora Brand didn't finish her run.

The Pioneers and the other RMISA schools were scheduled to do two days of giant slalom races after the alpine portion of the collegiate season got underway last Thursday and Friday with slalom events at the Westminster Invitational in Snowbird, Utah.

DU in in fifth place in the MSU Invite after the four Nordic races but is only 35 points behind second-place Alaska Anchorage.

UP NEXT: The Nordic squads continue their season this weekend with the start of the Spencer Nelson Colorado Memorial Invitational at Howelsen Hill Ski Area in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The meet begins with the men's and women's 20K classic mass start on Friday before the women's 5K and men's 10K freestyle interval start on Saturday.

Presently, the next scheduled alpine events will occur at the CU Invite with giant slalom races on Feb. 9-10 at Eldora Mountain Resort. The DU Invitational will immediately follow with slalom events on Feb. 11-12 at Loveland Ski Area.
