Pioneers Fight for Sweep of South Dakota State

DENVER, CO --The Denver volleyball team battled back in the second set to sweep the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) Saturday at home at Hamilton Gymnasium.

The conference win improved Denver's record to 7-9 overall and 6-2 in Summit action.

Cassie Davis finished with 15 kills on the day to lead the Pioneers attack. Denver got 19 digs from Gianna Bartalo along with five blocks from Molly Mirabelli to lead the Pios defense.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Pioneers opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-22. Denver never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Pioneers took over in the second half of the stanza. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked six South Dakota State attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Denver won set two 25-22 to grab an early 2-0 lead. The Pioneers rallied after being down as many as 11 points at 16-5 to win the set. Denver jumped in front at 23-22 and hung on for the victory, collecting 19 kills in the process.

SET 3 | Denver finished off the match in a sweep after winning the third set. The Pioneers grabbed control of the set early when the score was 5-4 and never trailed to win 25-21. Denver led by five points at 12-7 before finishing off the stanza, collecting 16 kills . Denver's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five South Dakota State attacks in the stanza.
