DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team (9-2-7, 5-1-2 Summit) found an equalizer in the 90
th minute to send its Summit League semifinal match against Omaha to extra time before falling in a penalty shootout on Sunday evening.
After kickoff was delayed by four hours to allow time for the field to be cleared following an overnight snowstorm, the match finally got underway at 5 p.m. UNO opened the scoring 13
th minute, but Denver graduate student
Kaitlyn Glover found DU's first equalizer in 14 minutes later with her team-best eighth goal of the season.
Omaha again broke the tie early in the second and held a 2-1 lead until Denver junior
Jadyn Goodrich deflected a header across the goal line with just 60 seconds remaining on the clock.
Neither team found a goal in either overtime period, sending the match to a decisive penalty shootout that Omaha won, 3-2, to advance to the Summit League final.
SIGNIFICANT STATS:
- Goodrich's goal at 89:00 was the fifth latest equalizer in DU's Division I history.
- It was the second latest goal for Denver in a postseason match since Nicholette DiGiacomo's 89:23 equalizer against Maryland in the second round of the NCAA tournament on November 16, 2012 – a match DU would go on to win in OT.
- Overall, it was also DU's latest goal of the 2023 season and the 19th latest in Denver's Division I history.
- Graduate student Camryn MacMillan had the primary assist on both of Denver's goals, making her the third Pioneer with a multi-assist match this season.
- Glover finishes the year atop DU's standings for goals (8) and points (20) while MacMillan and junior Riley Baker joined senior Vanessa Murray in a tie for the team lead in assists (5) after combining for three helpers on Sunday.
- Glover played in her 93rd career match, the third most in Denver's DI history.
- MacMillan made her 83rd appearance for Denver, which tied her for 22nd most in program history.
- Sunday's result was Denver's seventh tie of the season, a new DU Division I record and the most since its five draws in both in 2011 and 2007.
FIRST HALF:
1' | Murray had the first of DU's 16 shots just 43 seconds into the match, striking the ball toward the left goal post from near the edge of the box but saw her ball curl a few inches wide.
13' | UNO's Alyssa Keller collected a header from her teammate on her approach into the penalty area and sent it past
Molly Wissman.
26' | Sophomore Lily O'Grady received a free kick from senior Jordan Crockett and fed it up to MacMillan near the edge of the 18-yard box. She lightly tapped it backward toward Glover, who launched it home.
SECOND HALF:
48' | UNO's Regan Zimmers headed a ball off a cross near the left goal post and snuck it through Wissman's hands.
90' | Baker sent in a cross from the right side of the box and near the end line. MacMillan connected with it, heading the ball toward the goal where it ricocheted off Goodrich and into the back of the net.
OVERTIME
100' | Murray tried to sneak a ball past the UNO keeper from just inside the penalty area, but UNO grabbed control of it.
109' | Freshman
Liv Moritz carried the ball toward the box for the second time in as many minutes, dodged a UNO defender and got a shot off, but UNO made the save.
