Denver came back from an early 1-0 deficit to win a 4-2 showdown against its Summit League rival South Dakota State on Thursday night. Freshman
Michaela McGowan posted the first equalizer of the match late in the first half while fellow freshman
Liv Moritz netted her sixth goal of the season to put DU up, 2-1, just 55 seconds into the second half.
Exactly five minutes after SDSU found its own equalizer in the 77
th minute, senior
McKenna Dannenhauer reclaimed the DU lead with what would be the game winner. Junior
Ella Frost then gave Denver a two-goal lead just four minutes later.
QUICK HITS:
- For the second time this year and the 20th time in its Division I history, Denver twice scored consecutive goals less than five minutes apart in a single match during its 4-2 win against SDSU:
- McGowan's (42:32) and Moritz's (45:55) goals were just 3:23 apart.
- Dannenhauer's (81:05) and Frost's (85:18) goals were just 4:13 apart.
- With her assist on Moritz's goal on Thursday night, graduate student Kaitlyn Glover moved into Denver's top 10 all-time for career points (70).
- Glover is also one match away from moving into the top five in DU's record books for career matched played (89).
- Denver converted four of its five shots on target against South Dakota State, marking the first time that DU scored on all but one of its SOGs (minimum two goals scored) since April 17, 2021, versus Omaha.
- With its win against SDSU, Denver is now the only undefeated team in Summit League play this year.
- Denver will recognize its seniors and graduate students after the match during its Senior Day ceremony.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES:
This will be the 14
th all-time meeting between Denver and South Dakota with DU holding a 10-2-1 record. The teams last met on October 2, 2022, at USD in a 4-2 win for Denver. South Dakota last made the trip to DU in the 2021 Summit League semifinals where the teams finished tied 1-1 after OT before DU advanced after winning the penalty shootout, 4-2. USD's last regular-season match in Denver was October 29, 2021, another match that finished tied at 1-1.
The Coyotes are coming off a 0-0 draw at Omaha on Thursday – matching DU's result at UNO just five days ago. Goalkeeper Caroline Lewis made five stops to preserve the cleansheet while Brooke Kercher-Pratt and Rylee Haldeman shared the team lead with two shots in the match.
