DU Women’s Soccer Posts 3-1 Win Over South Dakota

Two Pioneers earn three points as Denver celebrates Senior Day on Sunday

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team (8-1-5, 4-0-1 Summit) scored a 3-1 victory over South Dakota to send its seniors out in style at University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

Junior Samantha Dreiling opened the scoring with her second goal of the season and DU's third-fastest goal so far in 2023, putting Denver up 1-0 in the ninth minute. Dreiling found herself involved in DU's next goal, feeding the ball to graduate student Kaitlyn Glover just about 10 minutes later. South Dakota pulled within one off a corner kick late in the second half, but DU reclaimed the two-goal lead in the 64th minute when junior Riley Baker snuck the ball around the post and across the line.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Both Glover and Dreiling posted three points on the day, the first time Denver had two different student-athletes each with a goal and an assist in a match this year.
  • Glover moved up the Denver record books in multiple ways on Sunday:
    • Her goal was the game winner and the 11th of her career, which is tied for fifth-most in DU's Division I history.
    • Her three points brought her career total to 73, which is tied for ninth-most in DU history,
    • She has now played in 89 matches for DU, tying her for fourth-most in Denver history.
  • Baker matched her career high for shots with four, three of which were on target.
  • DU dominated the time of possession, finishing with a 65-35% edge.
  • Denver remains the lone remaining undefeated team in Summit League play this year.
FIRST HALF:
7' | Glover fed the ball to freshman Liv Moritz around 25 yards out, but Moritz's shot went a tad too high.

9' | Dreiling juggled around two USD defenders, kept with the ball into the 18-yard box and launched it off the keeper's hands and into the left side of the net.

12' | Dreiling again had a look at the South Dakota goal, but the USD keeper jumped up to keep it clear of the crossbar.

19' | From midfield, Dreiling pushed the ball toward the box with the outside of her foot and connected with Glover, who dodged one USD defender before bouncing the ball inside the right goal post.

40' | Off a corner kick, South Dakota stuck with the ball inside Wissman's box and eventually nudged it across the line.

SECOND HALF:
64' | Glover had yet another excellent touch to send the ball perfectly up to Baker at the edge of the box. The junior then dodged around the left side of the USD keeper and turned back toward the net, sneaking the ball from near the endline and around the post with her left heel.

73' | Frost sent a free kick too high from about 20 yards out.

82' | Senior McKenna Dannenhauer carried the ball down the right side of the box and arched it with some heat toward net, but USD made the save.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (8-1-5, 4-0-1 Summit) hosts its final home match of the regular season when it welcomes Kansas City on Thursday, October 12, at 7 p.m. MT.
