Pioneers Fall Short in Late Rally Against Omaha

VERMILLION, SD --The Denver volleyball team fell in five sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-16) to the Omaha Mavericks on Monday at Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The loss moved Denver to 14-12 on the season.

The Pioneers attack was paced by Cassie Davis, who finished with 25 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .357, and by MacKenzie Fidelak, who had 11. The Pios got 28 digs from Gianna Bartalo along with five blocks from Davis and five rejections from Molly Mirabelli to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Pioneers couldn't survive a furious Omaha rally in the first set, losing 25-21 after leading by eight points at 16-8 earlier in the set.

SET 2 | Denver fell in set two 25-21, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Pioneers trailed by as many as 10 points as Omaha grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was tied up just once before the Mavericks took over the lead.

SET 3 | Denver stayed alive with a win in set three to make it a 2-1 match. The Pioneers the set the third set 25-20. Denver took the lead for good at 16-15 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Pioneers took over in the second half of the stanza. Denver's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Omaha attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Omaha attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Denver then kept the comeback train rolling, winning the fourth set 25-15 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Pioneers led from the first point on in the set to secure the victory. Denver opened up as much as a 10 point lead at 19-9 before closing out the stanza, totaling 19 kills along the way.

SET 5 | Denver lost the first two sets, but came back to tie it at 2-2 before falling 16-14 in the fifth set. The Pioneers fell in a tight fifth set, losing in a stanza that was tied nine times and had three lead changes.
