No. 4 Denver Shuts Out Yale 5-0

Pioneers hockey takes the non-conference series opener

DENVER – Forwards Jack Devine and McKade Webster both had three-point nights and goaltender Freddie Halyk recorded his second shutout of the season on Friday in the No. 4 Denver Pioneers hockey team's 5-0 win over the Yale Bulldogs at Magness Arena.

Denver goes for the weekend sweep of Yale in the series finale on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcasted on NCHC.tv.

Webster scored and added two assists for a career-best three points, while Devine had a helper and tallied twice for his fifth multi-goal game of the season. Freshmen Miko Matikka and Zeev Buium also scored for the Pioneers.

Halyk stopped all 13 shots he faced and is on an 80:02 shutout streak. He also posted a clean sheet in his first career start on Oct. 28 against Air Force.

Denver finished with a 34-13 edge in shots, including outshooting Yale 8-1 in the first period and 12-4 in the second period.

"Especially after last week and weeks previous, we just want to get our goals against down," said Webster, the senior captain of the team. "Focused on a lot of defensive work this week, so it paid off tonight."

Matikka tallied for the sixth consecutive game when he opened the scoring off his own rebound with 3:27 remaining in the first period, and DU pushed its lead to 3-0 with markers from Devine and Buium in a matter of 2:30 midway through the second frame. Devine added his second of the night at 7:29 of the third and Webster scored his fourth of the season with 7:21 remaining after his outside shot deflected into the net off a Yale player's stick.

Bulldogs goaltender Jack Stark made 29 saves.

The Pioneers finished 1-for-6 on the power play and was a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

UP NEXT: DU is halfway through its season-long six-game homestand. After wrapping up its series on Saturday with Yale, the Pioneers host rival and No. 1 North Dakota on Dec. 1-2 at Magness Arena.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • Denver improved to 7-1-0 all-time vs. Yale and 5-1-0 at home in the series. The teams were meeting for the first time in nearly 11 years, as they last played on Nov. 23, 2012 in Denver.
  • DU is 2-0 this year when wearing its gold third jerseys.
  • The Pioneers played on Black Friday for the second consecutive season.
  • Denver outshot Yale 8-1 in the first period, tying the fewest shots it had allowed in a frame this year. DU allowed just one shot in consecutive periods, as the Pios also let up just one shot in the third period last Sunday, Oct. 19, against Omaha.
  • Head coach David Carle (125-56-14) won his 125th career game, tying his predecessor, Jim Montgomery, for fourth on DU's all-time wins list (125-57-26, 208 games).  Carle's current .677 winning percentage is presently the best in program history (Murray Armstrong, 1956-1977, .674; Jim Montgomery, 2013-2018, .663).
  • Miko Matikka scored for the sixth straight game, the longest goal streak by a Pioneer since Dylan Gambrell went on a seven-game run from Feb. 13-March 5, 2016 (8g/14a).
  • Jack Devine (2g/1a) picked up his fifth multi-goal game of the season.
  • McKade Webster's three points (1g/2a)were a career high and his seventh multi-point game of his career.
  • Zeev Buium stretched his career-best point streak to seven games (3g/7a), which is the longest by a DU freshman defenseman since Sean Behrens' seven-game run from Jan. 15-Feb. 5, 2022 (2g/9a).
  • Tristan Broz is on a three-game point streak (0g/4a), matching a season long. His three-game assist streak ties a career high.
  • Carter King had a career-high 17 faceoff wins, but his career-long nine-game point streak (7g/9a) ended—it was the longest of the season by a Denver player.
  • Goaltender Paxton Geisel joined DU roster for the remainder of the season on Friday and served as the backup in the game

QUOTABLES
Senior Captain McKade Webster
On the battles in front of the net: "One of our keys is winning the battle of the net-fronts, and that's our net, block out for Freddie, and then getting into their paint and try and bury home a greaser. But take their eyes away. Battle of the net-fronts is one of our keys."

On earning a shutout with only allowing 13 shots against: "It definitely helps out a lot. I'm sure (goaltender) Fred [Halyk] loves it. The less shots the better. It helps out, I mean when we have pressure on their guys, stop plays before it happens and we transition into offense right away, so you kind of saw that tonight."
