DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball team had five players in double figures led by Tommy Bruner's 28 to earn its first win of the season by a count of 97-76 over Cal Poly on Thursday night inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
Jaxon Brenchley tacked on 14 points and Isaiah Addo-Ankrah helped out with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists from the bench.
Denver shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 19 assists on 27 made field goals. Addo-Ankrah's five assists paced the Pioneers and Brenchley also added three assists of his own.
Notes:
- Tommy Bruner finished with 28 points and five rebounds and three assists.
o Bruner finished in double figures for the fourth-straight game and the 74th time in his career
o Bruner had 20+ points for the 10th time in his Denver career.
o Bruner drew a game-high eight fouls and went a perfect 14-for-14 from the foul line
o Bruner's perfect day at the line tied for the third most free-throws made without a miss in the entire program history, and the first with 14+ since the 1984-85 season.
o Addo-Ankrah finished in double figures for the first time as a Pioneer and for the 11th time in his college career.
o Addo-Ankrah's assist total was a career-high.
o Carr finished in double figures in points for the first time in his career.
o Tainamo finished in double figures for the second-straight game and the 31st time in his career.
o Brenchley reached double figures for the fifth time in his NCAA career.
o Brenchley tied a carer-high in points.
- Denver improved to 7-2 in November in the last two seasons.
- The Pioneers scored 95 points for the first time since a 100-96 overtime win over Oral Roberts on February 20, 2020.
- Denver's 97 points were its third most in the program's Division I history.
- Denver had five players finish in double figures for the 11th time under head coach Jeff Wulbrun.
- The Pioneers made 32 free-throws, its most since knocking down 32 against Colorado College in November, 2022.
How It Happened
After playing to an 8-8 tie, Denver went on a 14-0 run with 15:18 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Addo-Ankrah, to take a 22-8 lead. The Pioneers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 51-33 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 51 points.
Denver kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 97-76 with 34 seconds to go in the contest, The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 97-76 win. Denver got out on the break in the period, scoring 12 fast break points.
