Defensive Effort Leads Denver Over Colorado Christian

DENVER, CO --The Denver women's basketball team kept Colorado Christian to just 20 percent from deep on the way to an 81-59 win over the Cougars at home on Tuesday.

The Pioneers (3-7) had four players score in double figures, led by Lauren With, who had 15 points. Emily Counsel added 15 points and Makayla Minett chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Denver out-rebounded Colorado Christian 39-28 in Tuesday's game, led by Jordan Jones' nine boards.

The Denver defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 14 Colorado Christian turnovers, the takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Angelina Robles' two steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 6-2 advantage, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 7:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Robles, to increase its lead to 14-2. The Pioneers then added to that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-6 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 19 points.

Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 8:21 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Minett, to increase its lead to 29-6. The Pioneers proceeded to tack on five points and enjoyed a 46-18 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down six three-point shots to account for 18 of its 27 points.

Denver continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jones, to expand its lead further to 51-20 with 8:19 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Cougars had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with a 65-42 edge. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

Denver kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-46 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Counsel's three, to grow the lead to 75-46 with 6:05 to go in the contest. The Cougars narrowed the margin before the game was over, but the Pioneers finished strong to earn the 81-59 win. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
