DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones scored 23 points and Emma Smith added 20 to lead the Denver women's basketball team past the Omaha Mavericks 81-63 at home Friday. With the win, the Pioneers move to 1-0 in Summit League play.
The Pioneers (4-8, 1-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Jones, who notched a double-double with 23 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Smith tacked on 20 points and four assists and Angelina Robles chipped in as well with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Denver out-rebounded Omaha 44-26 in Friday's game, led by Jones' 16 boards. The Pioneers also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.
The Denver defense held Omaha shooters to just 36.4 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-2, Denver went on a 12-0 run with 7:56 left in the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Smith led the Pios with a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the first nine minutes. The Pioneers then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 31-18 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 31 points.
Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 8:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Emily Counsel, to increase its lead to 40-20. The Mavericks cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 52-36 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
After intermission, Denver held on to its advantage and owned a 60-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Denver played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
Denver started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Robles' jumper, to grow the lead to 66-52 with 7:34 to go in the contest. The Pioneers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 81-63 win. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
