DENVER, CO --The Denver men's basketball team out-rebounded the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 28-26, but fell 80-75 at home Thursday.
The Pioneers (13-16, 4-12) had four players score in double figures, led by Justin Mullins, who had 17 points. Tevin Smith tacked on 17 points and two steals and Touko Tainamo helped out with 13 points and eight rebounds.
How It Happened
After playing to a 21-21 tie, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 6:28 left in the first half to take a 29-21 lead. The Pioneers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 38-29 advantage.
Following intermission, Denver kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-41 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Lukas Kisunas' layup, to grow the lead to 59-41 with 13:12 to go in the contest. South Dakota State then asserted control, outscoring the Pioneers 39-16 the rest of the way to hand Denver the 80-75 loss. Denver took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 37 points in the lane.
