CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – The No. 43-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (10-2) earned a comeback 4-3 win at No. 67 Harvard on Saturday.
Doubles:
Harvard claimed the doubles point, starting with a 6-2 win on court 3 over DU freshmen
Caroline Driscoll and
Louise Wikander and then taking the point with a 6-3 win in No. 1 doubles over DU senior
Britt Pursell and fifth-year student
Taylor Melville.
Singles:
Denver came back from a 0-1 deficit following doubles, winning the first three singles matches to finish. Pursell put DU on the board first with a solid 6-2 6-4 win in No. 3 singles.
Freshmen Wikander and Driscoll each lost just four games, Wikander winning her first set with a bagel – her fifth match in a row with at least one 6-0 set – and Driscoll taking two 6-2 wins.
Harvard knotted things up at 3-all in the team standings with wins on courts 6 and 2, leaving the match to be decided in No. 1 singles between No. 65-ranked Melville and No. 82-ranked Charlotte Owensby from Harvard.
Melville fought back after dropping the first set and facing a 2-5 deficit in the second set. She saved five match points before winning the second set, 7-5, and forced a third set where she would clinch the win for DU at 6-2.
