[13/16] Denver Drops BIG EAST Opener at [15/15] Georgetown

The Pioneers will return to the Mile High City for Bill Tierney Day next Saturday against Villanova

DENVER – The [13/16] University of Denver men's lacrosse team fell to [15/15] Georgetown 13-6 in both teams' BIG EAST opener on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field.
 
Inside the Box Score:
Malcolm Kleban made nine saves in the opening 45 minutes and Jack Thompson made three more in the fourth.
 
Six different players scored Denver's six goals on Saturday. Mic Kelly and Michael Lampert were Denver's only two multi-point getters (1-1).
 
First Quarter:
The Pioneers opened the scoring with back-to-back tallies from Casey Wilson in transition and Richie Connell on the man-up to give Denver a two-goal lead.
 
Georgetown answered with a seven-goal run in the middle stages of the first half, including three in the final 2:52 of the opening quarter.
 
Kleban made seven saves in the first 15 minutes to keep the deficit to one through 15 minutes.
 
Second Quarter:
The Hoyas scored the first four of the second quarter in a four-minute span to take a 7-2 advantage with 8:15 to play.
 
Denver got the final two goals of the half, a sprint and dive across the crease from Lampert and Jack Tortolani dunked home a JJ Sillstrop feed from behind the cage with 18 seconds left to make it a 7-4 game heading into the intermission.
 
Third Quarter:
Georgetown got the first two of the third quarter to restore its five-goal advantage with 5:08 to play in the third. Stephen Avery got his first of the day and 18th of his season off a feed from Kelly to make it 9-5.
 
Kelly scored a goal of his own late in the third-quarter to stop another quick Georgetown two-goal spurt as the Hoyas took a five-goal lead into the final frame.
 
Fourth Quarter:
The Hoyas extended their lead to 13-6 with three minutes to play in the BIG EAST opener, the only two goals of the quarter coming at 10:33 and 3:08 of the period.
 
Game Notes:
  • Georgetown outshot Denver 46-23 on Saturday.
  • The Hoyas had a 16-7 advantage at the faceoff stripe.
