DENVER – University of Denver Men's Basketball head coach Jeff Wulbrun continued to build out to his roster, announcing the signing of Isaiah Carr on Tuesday. The incoming Pioneer has signed his athletic grant to continue his academic and athletic career with the Pioneers.
"Isaiah Carr is a tremendous addition to our DU Basketball program," Wulbrun said. " At 7 feet, he will give us elite-level rim protection on the defensive end, allowing us to be more aggressive on the perimeter and will pose problems for our opponents as a ball screen defender. He should immediately give us a lob threat, a very efficient offensive player around the rim and a rim runner in transition. He runs the floor very well for a player his size, has great hands and feet and the opportunity to continue to develop him in the coming years is a coach's dream."
Carr, a 7-foot forward, adds some serious size to the Denver frontcourt for the upcoming season. The Las Cruces, N.M. native spent last year at Grand Canyon, helping the team to a 24-12 record and its second NCAA Tournament appearance ever. Carr made six starts throughout the year for the Lopes. Carr is the first 7-foot player the Pioneers have had in their Division I era.
'He was excited about our program and the opportunity for him here at DU," Wulbrun said. "He reflects our core values, achieves at a high level academically and will be a great culture for our program."
The No. 1 rated recruit coming out of high school in the state of New Mexico in 2022, Carr was a force at Las Cruces High School. The big man posted a high school record of 102-4, resulting in three straight state championship appearances. He won the state championship as a sophomore. As a senior in 2021-22, he posted averages of 18.6 points to go along with 10.7 rebounds and 3.6 blocks.
The Pioneers are currently training for the 2023-24 year.
