Pioneers on 2022-23 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team

Denver hockey has 24 players honored, including 12 named as Distinguished Scholar-Athletes

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey program had 24 players named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and 12 Pioneers earned NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition during the 2022-23 campaign.

To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average or better, while having completed at least one full academic year at their current institution. Student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better are honored as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Academic All-Conference.

The NCHC announced its initial lists of 117 total student-athletes on Feb. 22 before an additional 67 players that were freshman or first-year transfers were added to the list on Friday. In total 174 players were named to the Academic All-Conference Team, with 105 also earning Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honors. Freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible when the honors were first announced as they had not completed a full academic year. Athletic success and playing time are not criteria for these awards.

Pioneer freshmen Kent Anderson, Tristan Lemyre, Rieger Lorenz, Lucas Olvestad, Aidan Thompson, Jared Wright and transfer-students Tristan Broz (sophomore) and Casey Dornbach (grad student) were Denver's newcomers to the Academic All-Conference Team. Anderson, Dornbach, Lorenz, Olvestad, Thompson and Wright were Distinguished Scholar-Athletes for posting a 3.5 GPA or better in 2022-23.

DU's other 17 student-athletes that were recognized on the conference's all-academic team back in February were Mike Benning, Shai Buium, Connor Caponi, Jack Caruso, Magnus Chrona, Matt Davis, Jack Devine, Brett Edwards, Carter King, Lane Krenzen, Justin Lee, Kyle Mayhew, Carter Mazur, Owen Ozar, Massimo Rizzo and McKade Webster. Chrona, Davis, Devine, King, Krenzen and Mayhew rounded out Denver's 12 total NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes. King was also the recipient of the Denver hockey team's 2022-23 Dr. Art Mason Top Scholar-Athlete award.

As a team, the Pioneers hockey program finished the 2022-23 academic year with a 3.46 grade-point average.
