DENVER – The University of Denver hockey program has 18 current and former players that have or will be attending 2023 NHL prospect development camps, which began last week across the league.
The Pioneers have nine current players and eight alumni attending camps, in addition to 2023-24 committed incoming freshman Miko Matikka with the Arizona Coyotes.
Denver has multiple representatives at the Colorado (
Sean Behrens,
Kyle Mayhew), Detroit (
Shai Buium,
Carter Mazur, Antti Tuomisto), Florida (
Mike Benning,
Jack Devine), Minnesota (
Casey Dornbach,
Rieger Lorenz) and Pittsburgh (
Tristan Broz,
Justin Lee) development camps. Overall, DU players are taking part in 12 different NHL camps.
Development camps are a time where teams can get prospects and invitees familiarized with the professional level of the sport, so the players are prepared for the transition if they possibly turn pro one day. Camps tend to range from three to five days and usually focus on many different aspects of being a professional, including on-ice skill work, nutrition and meal preparation, off-ice training and finances. While many teams hold their summer prospect camps in the days following the NHL Draft, several organizations hold their event later in July.
