DU Women’s Soccer Set for 2023 Opener Against Colorado State

Denver hosts CSU on Thursday, August 17

WHO: Denver vs. Colorado State
WHAT: DU's 2023 season opener
WHERE: University of Denver Soccer Stadium
WHEN: Thursday, August 17, at 7 p.m. MT

LAST TIME OUT:
DU hosted two preseason exhibition matches, first earning a 1-0 win over LSU on August 8 before falling to Texas Tech, 2-0. Graduate student Kaitlyn Glover had DU's game winner against LSU with an assist from fellow graduate student Camryn MacMillan.

Denver finished the 2022 season with an 11-4-4 record including 8-0-1 in the Summit League. Denver was the No. 1 seed for the Summit League tournament and played to a 0-0 draw against Oral Roberts in the semifinals, though ORU would advance 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

QUICK HITS:
  • Denver was voted as the favorite to win the Summit League in the 2023 Preseason Coaches' Poll, leading with 62 points and six first-place votes.
  • Graduate students Glover and Hannah Gallegos earned recognition as 2023 Summit League Players to Watch after both were named to the 2022 All-Summit League Team.
  • DU will seek its 13th trip to the NCAA tournament and its eighth Summit League tournament title in 2023. Denver captured its sixth Summit League regular-season title last season.
  • Seven Denver returners from the 2022 roster made double-digit starts for DU last season including Gallegos, MacMillan and junior Ella Frost, each of whom started in 18 or 19 matches.
  • Eight newcomers join Denver in 2023, and all but one saw playing time during DU's two exhibition matches.
  • Thursday marks the NCAA Division I coaching debut for new Denver head coach Julianne Sitch, who led the University of Chicago men's team to a 22-0-1 record and the NCAA Division III national title in 2022.

SCOUTING THE RAMS:
This will be the eighth meeting between Denver and Colorado State with the teams all even with a 3-3-1 record. DU captured a 2-1 win in their most recent meeting (September 11, 2022, at CSU) off a 90th-minute game winner from Sami Feller.

CSU last visited Denver on August 22, 2021, in a 1-0 victory for DU in OT after then-sophomore Jordan Crockett netted the game winner in the 92nd minute.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU continues its opening week slate against another in-state opponent when it visits Colorado College on Sunday, August 20, at 12 p.m. MT.
