DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team posted its second-straight sweep to open the 2024 dual match season, topping Colorado State, 4-0, on Sunday at Denver Tennis Park.
Sunday's win was DU's second sweep in as many days over an in-state foe after topping Air Force, 5-0, on Saturday.
Doubles:
Denver won the doubles point off matching 6-2 wins from two teams of sophomores: No. 2 team
Caroline Driscoll and
Louise Wikander, and No. 3 team
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Alice Otis. Driscoll/Wikander won both of their matches on the weekend while Martinez de Velasco/Otis captured their first win as a team after leaving their match unfinished on Saturday against Air Force – though they held a 5-3 lead.
Singles:
Martinez de Velasco posted the first singles victory of the day, dropping just three games on Court 3. Wikander and Driscoll followed shortly, each dropping six or fewer games and both matching Martinez de Velasco in collecting a 6-2 set along the way. In No. 2 singles, junior
Andrea Burguete Beltran held a set and a break lead when the match was decided in Denver's favor. Graduate student
Britt Pursell, who moved to No. 1 singles after debuting at No. 2 singles on Saturday, had just pushed her match to a third set while Otis was up 1-0 in her third set on Court 5.
