WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Denver men's tennis team began its 2024 dual season with a 5-2 win versus Western Michigan in a neutral-site match on Saturday.
DU jumped out to a 3-0 lead before WMU captured back-to-back singles victories to narrow the scoreline to 3-2. Senior
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta fended off match points late in a third set before winning at No. 1 singles to clinch the dual win for Denver.
Doubles:
Denver captured the doubles win off wins on the top courts, starting with a dominant 6-0 win from its No. 1 team of graduate students
Anish Sriniketh and
Marvin Schaber. In No. 2 doubles, Herrero Cuesta and junior
Rikuto Yamaguchi used a 6-4 win to give DU the early 1-0 lead.
Singles:
Senior
Charlie Miller dropped just a single game in his first set before scoring DU's second bagel of the day to capture an easy win at No. 6 singles. Sriniketh followed with matching 6-4 scores in his straight-sets win on Court 5.
Western Michigan got on the board with a win in two sets at No. 4 singles and then brought the dual to 3-2 with a win in three sets on Court 3.
Herrero Cuesta's comeback win in No. 1 singles stopped the WMU momentum and sealed the win for Denver. After dropping the first set, the DU senior broke early in the second and held on for a 6-4 win to push the match to a third set. Down 4-5, he faced three match points but fought them off before breaking in his next return game before holding for a 7-5 win.
Junior
Daniel Sancho Arbizu, too, found himself in a third set and like Herrero Cuesta, he came back from a set down to win the second set 6-4 after trading breaks midway through. Again, the players traded breaks midway in the third set before Sancho Arbizu gained another break lead for 5-4 where he would win the deuce point to give DU a fifth point on the day.
