Big Games From Robles and Minett Not Enough in Denver's Loss to Omaha

OMAHA, NE -- Angelina Robles scored a career-high 28 points and Makayla Minett added 20, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the Omaha Mavericks 80-77 on the road Saturday.

Robles and Minett's stellar scoring performances led the Pioneers (4-16, 1-6) in the contest. Robles tacked on six rebounds, five assists, and two steals and Minett added 18 rebounds and two blocks. Emily Counsel also helped out with 13 points, four assists and two blocks. The 13 field goals from Robles ties for third most by a Pioneer in a single game while Minett's 18 rebounds ties for fourth.

Denver grabbed 33 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Omaha's 28, led by Minett's 18 boards.

Denver forced 16 Omaha turnovers. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jordan Jones led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-8, Denver went on a 7-0 run with 4:58 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Minett, to take a 15-9 lead. The Pioneers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 17-11 advantage. Denver did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.

Omaha rallied to take a 21-19 lead before Denver went on an 8-0 run starting at the 7:11 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Counsel, to take a 27-21 lead. The Pioneers proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 37-27 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 20 points.

Omaha then took a 49-45 lead following intermission before Denver went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Robles, to grab a 52-49 lead with 1:41 to go in the third. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 58-55 edge. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.

Omaha proceeded to take a 68-67 lead before Denver went on a 6-0 run to seize a 73-68 lead with 2:32 to go in the contest. Omaha re-asserted control, outscoring the Pioneers 12-4 the rest of the way to hand Denver the 80-77 loss. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
