DENVER – University of Denver fifth-year guard Tommy Bruner has been named the Summit League Male Athlete of the Month for December, the league office announced on Thursday. Bruner earned the award for the second-consecutive month to start the season as he continues to lead the country in both scoring (25.2) and free-throws made (115).
Bruner averaged 25.4 points in the month of December to go with 5.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. The Denver guard shot 57-68 from the free-throw line, finishing from the stripe at an 83.8% clip.
The South Carolina native had 20+ points in five of seven games in the month, including 28 in Denver's match-up in Fort Collins at nationally ranked Colorado State. Bruner had a career-high 37 points in a single-digit Denver win on December 18. In addition to his scoring, Bruner distributed the basketball well, finishing with a career-high eight assists three different times in the month.
While leading the country in scoring and free-throw shooting, Bruner is also 56th in the country in assists (67), second in field goals made (125) and 42nd in three-pointers made (39).
Bruner's back-to-back awards joins Denver men's soccer's Oje Ofunrein and Isaac Nehme, giving Denver the male athlete of the month in all four months in this athletic calendar, the first time that has been accomplished by a school in the Summit League since South Dakota in 2016-17.
