LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Denver women's tennis team placed its three doubles teams and two singles players into the round of 16 at the 2024 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by New Mexico State, after the first two days of play.
 
Play began on Thursday with the first round of doubles and qualifying singles. Two of DU's doubles teams – that of senior Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior Marley Lambert, and juniors Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander – received byes into the round of 32. The duo of junior Hana Bečirovič Novak and freshman Natálie Cinková easily joined them in the round of 32 with an 8-2 win in their opening match.
 
Only Cinková was in singles action for Denver on Thursday, playing in the qualifying draw. The freshman dropped her opening match, moving her into the consolation bracket where she lost the first set but fought back to win the second. The match was decided by a 10-point match tiebreak, which her opponent from New Mexico won, 10-6.
 
On Friday, all three of DU's doubles teams captured wins to move into the round of 16 – Burguete Beltran/Lambert after losing just one game, and Martinez de Velasco/Wikander and Bečirovič Novak/Cinková both winning in a tiebreak.
 
In singles, Burguete Beltran dropped just four and five games, respectively in her two matches on Friday. Joining her in Saturday's round of 16 is Martinez de Velasco, who battled through three sets twice.
 
Lambert and Wikander each went 1-1 on the day in singles, both winning their first matches before falling in the round of 32.
 
Play continues at the 2024 ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Saturday with the round of 16 in both singles and doubles.
