DU Women’s Soccer Drops 4-2 Decision at Oral Roberts

Goodrich, D. McGowan net first goals of 2024 in Denver’s only match of the week

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Denver women's soccer team (7-5-1, 1-1-1 Summit) saw two first-time goal scorers for the 2024 season, but the Pioneers fell, 2-4, at Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jadyn Goodrich opened the scoring just over three minutes into the match with her first of the season before Oral Roberts rattled off four straight – two on either side of halftime. Fellow DU senior Delaney McGowan also found her first goal in 2024 to pull Denver back with in one with a goal in the 77th minute, but the Golden Eagles were able to hold on for the win.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Goodrich's goal at 3:09 was DU's fastest so far in 2024, besting the team's previous quickest goal of 4:32 by senior Riley Baker at Southern Utah.
  • D. McGowan's goal was the third of her career and her first since the 2022 season.
    • The senior lead DU in shot attempts (four) and shots on goal (three), both career-high marks.
  • Denver's 12 shots on goal matched its most of the season, equaling the mark set at Southern Utah on September 8.
  • For the fourth time this year and in the second straight match, DU logged at least 20 shot attempts with its 22 on Saturday.
  • Oral Roberts' keeper Alexa Riefer made 10 saves on the day, the most by a Denver opponent in 2024.
FIRST HALF:
4' | Off a short free kick taken by redshirt sophomore Emma Thielbahr, fifth-year player Jordan Crockett served a ball into the six-yard box. Freshman Megan Murray knocked down the ball toward Goodrich, who sent it past an outstretched ORU keeper.

9' | ORU sent a cross in from near the corner flag, and Samantha Guzman found the ball at her feet and lifted it over DU keeper Molly Wissman.

19' | The Golden Eagles looked to have snuck a ball across the DU goal line but had the goal disallowed for offside.

20' | A scramble inside the ORU box saw sophomore Liv Moritz push the ball into the back of the net, but the Pioneers were ruled offside.

26' | ORU claimed a 2-1 lead off a corner kick after a second header from Jordan Grigsby snuck just under the crossbar by a narrow margin.

33' | With some heat, sophomore Michaela McGowan tried to force a ball into the center of the net but had her ball saved.

SECOND HALF:
53' | ORU's Julia Thasaphong settled a cross inside the box and sent it past Wissman's hands.

60' | After a video review, an ORU goal from Thasaphong was reinstated after it was determined she was onside.

61' | An Ella Frost feed through the ORU backline connected with redshirt junior Samantha Dreiling in the center of the box where ORU's keeper had to dive to make the save off Dreiling's shot.

77' | D. McGowan received a cross from Frost right at the far post and helped bounce the ball across the goal line.

81' | From outside the 18-yard box, M. McGowan took a look at the far post and nearly tucked it into the corner, only to have it bounce off the bottom side of the crossbar.

88' | D. McGowan tried to chip the ball under the crossbar from 20 yards out, though the ORU keeper grabbed it and kept it clear of the goal line.
