WACO, Texas – University of Denver women's tennis player
Andrea Burguete Beltran is moving on at the 2024 NCAA Division I Singles & Doubles Championships, hosted by Baylor, following a straight-sets victory in her first-round match on Tuesday.
Burguete Beltran defeated No. 31-ranked Oyinlomo Quadre from Florida International, 6-2 6-3, in the round of 64. She broke her opponent's serve six times during the match, helped by winning 80 percent of second-serve return points.
The match began with the two players exchanging breaks in the second and third games. Burguete Beltran broke at love to reclaim the lead at 4-2 before breaking yet again in the eighth game to claim the opening set, 6-2.
The second set began in nearly identical fashion to the first with traded breaks on the way to a Burguete Beltran 2-1 lead on serve. The Pioneer then seized momentum with consecutive breaks, racing out to a 5-1 lead. She held her first match points while serving for the match but was broke on the deuce point. After Quadre held in the seventh game, Burguete Beltran had a second chance to serve out the match and succeeded on her first match point of the game.
With the win, Burguete Beltran is now the fourth Denver women's tennis player to advance at the NCAA National Championships in singles and the first since
Julia O'Loughlin in 2017-18. The senior from Burriana, Spain, will now seek to become the first Pioneer to advance to the singles round of 16 in Denver's Division I history.
Next up for Burguete Beltran will be a round of 32 match against No. 43-ranked Theadora Rabman from North Carolina on Wednesday, who battled back from a set down to win in three in her round of 64 match. The Burguete Beltran/Rabman match is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. CT/9:30 a.m. MT on Wednesday.
