Denver Defeats UCSD in Overtime

DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime and Laia Monclova put the Denver women's basketball team ahead for good with 4:12 to go the extra period to give the Pioneers a 67-59 win over the UCSD Tritons at home on Sunday.

The Pioneers (2-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who secured a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Monclova tacked on 10 points and six rebounds and Emma Smith added five points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

The Denver offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in nine threes. Monclova was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining two treys in the contest.

Denver forced 26 UCSD turnovers while committing 24 themselves in Sunday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Smith's three steals led the way for Denver.

How It Happened

Denver kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 12-8.

Denver then cut the Tritons lead to 16-14 before going on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from Angelina Robles, to take a 23-16 lead. The Pioneers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 25-18 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.

Denver then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Tritons 38-32 entering the fourth. Denver knocked down one three-pointer in the quarter to score three of its seven total points.

Denver narrowed its deficit to 44-40 before going on a 6-0 run to seize a 46-44 lead with 4:52 to go in the fourth. The Tritons then fought back to even things up at 51-51 and send the game to overtime. Jones' 3-pointer sent the contest to an extra period with just three seconds left. Denver fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

Denver grabbed a 62-59 lead with 24 seconds left in the first overtime before going on a 5-0 run to grow its advantage to 67-59 with eight seconds to go in the period, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
