DU Women’s Soccer Falls in Summit League Semifinals

Goodrich begins Denver comeback with 89th minute goal before SDSU runs out the clock for 2-1 win

FARGO, N.D. – The University of Denver women's soccer team (11-6-2, 5-1-2 Summit) exited the Summit League tournament with a 2-1 loss to South Dakota State in Thursday's Summit League semifinals.

The No. 3-seeded Jackrabbits took an initial 1-0 lead off a converted penalty kick in the 29th minute and then extended the lead to 2-0 in the 61st. Senior Jadyn Goodrich pulled No. 2 seed Denver back within one with a goal in the 89th minute, but the 1:25 left on the clock was not enough for DU to find an equalizer.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Denver had two goals disallowed for offside, both in the final 16 minutes of play, and had two other substantial attacks stopped due to offside calls in the first half.
  • Sophomore Molly Wissman made a season-high six saves, a new DU record for most saves in a Summit League tournament match.
    • Her six saves also place her tied for second for the most saves by a DU keeper in an entire Summit League tournament.
  • Redshirt sophomore Hannah Tate and senior Payten Ivins each had a match-best three shot attempts, tying for the second-most by a DU player in a Summit League semifinal match.
  • Denver outshot South Dakota State, 14-12, marking only the third match all year that SDSU had fewer shots than an opponent.
    • DU was also responsible for one of the other two matches, outshooting the Jackrabbits, 22-8, in the teams' regular-season meeting at SDSU on October 24.
  • Thursday was only the second time that Denver had conceded the first goal in a Summit League tournament match. DU had opened the scoring in 15 of 16 previous tournament matches in which at least one goal was scored.
    • It was also only the second time Denver has lost a Summit League tournament match.
FIRST HALF:
20' | SDSU earned a free kick from just a yard beyond the penalty area, but Wissman easily grabbed the shot.

23' | Moments after having a DU attack ended with an offside call, sophomore Michaela McGowan again took a look at the net but pushed her shot high.

29' | The Jackrabbits drew a foul inside the penalty area and converted the attempt to the right of Wissman.

34' | M. McGowan settled a ball inside the box with just enough time to get a shot off but sent it over the net.

35' | Redshirt sophomore Emma Thielbahr connected on a arching free kick into the box only to see her header just narrowly miss sneaking under the crossbar.

43' | Ivins redirected a service toward the far post but watched the ball trail just inches too far right.

SECOND HALF:
54' | Tate and sophomore Liv Moritz set up an excellent attack for Denver but narrowly missed a quickly approaching freshman Megan Murray inside the box.

61' | Wissman made a fantastic first save to push the ball up and clear, but SDSU tapped home the rebound.

72' | Tate connected on an Ivins' cross into the box, but the SDSU keeper saved her header.

74' | Senior Ella Frost had a shot saved from the top of the box. Ivins tapped the rebound over the line, but the goal was disallowed due to a DU offside call.

81' | Moritz got loose inside the box and found the back of the net but had the goal called back for offside.

84' | Moritz had a look at the near post but curled it just wide right.

89' | For the second year in a row, Goodrich found the back of the net late in a Summit League semifinal, one-touching the ball past the outstretched SDSU keeper.
