Pioneers Drop Match to Kansas City

DENVER, CO --The Denver volleyball team fell to the UMKC Kangaroos in four sets (18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25) on Thursday in Hamilton Gymnasium.

The loss dropped Denver's record to 10-13 overall and 5-8 in Summit League play.

The Pioneers offense was paced by Cassie Davis, who finished with 12 kills on the day, and by Molly Mirabelli, who had 12 while hitting .375. The Pioneers got 14 digs from Alayna Finucan along with five blocks from Mirabelli to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Pioneers found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-18. Denver trailed by as many as nine points as UMKC never gave up the lead in a set that was notted up zero times before the Kangaroos took control.

SET 2 | Denver evened the match at 1-1 following a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Pioneers never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that featured eight ties and six lead changes. The Denver offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Denver fell in the third set, putting the Pioneers in a 2-1 hole. The Pioneers fought back from an eight-point deficit at 18-10, but UMKC held on to win the set 25-23.

SET 4 | Denver then fell in the fourth set 25-17 to finish off the match. The Pioneers lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set.
