BOULDER, CO --The Denver women's basketball team got a 27-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-61 to the Colorado Buffaloes on the road, Tuesday.
The Pioneers (4-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. Coryn Watts tacked on a career-high 14 points and two steals off of the bench and Emma Smith chipped in as well with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Denver utilized fantastic ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 15 assists on 21 made field goals. Jones' five assists paced the Pioneers.
The Denver defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 15 Colorado turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into seven points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's four steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Denver went on a 7-0 run with 8:15 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jones, to take a 7-5 lead. The Pioneers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 21-17.
The Pioneers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-25 halftime deficit.
Colorado continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 54-29 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Watts, to trim its deficit to 54-35 with 3:22 to go in the third. The Pioneers continued to reduce the Colorado lead, shrinking it to 58-41 by the end of the third quarter. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 16 total points.
Denver came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 58-48 with 6:53 to go in the contest. Colorado responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-61. Denver fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
