DU Men’s Tennis Adds 4-3 Road Win at Utah State

Denver comes back 2-0 deficit, wins four straight matches to clinch the win

LOGAN, Utah – The University of Denver men's tennis team (6-0, 0-0 Summit) remained undefeated to begin the 2024 dual season with a 4-3 win at Utah State on Sunday.

Denver mounted a comeback after going down 2-0 early before winning four consecutive singles matches to secure the win.

Doubles:
Utah State got on the board first with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. DU's No. 2 team of senior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and junior Rikuto Yamaguchi were at 4-5 in their match when the doubles point was clinched, leaving their match unfinished.

Singles:
The Aggies took a 2-0 overall lead with a win at No. 4 singles before Denver rattled off four wins in a row, starting with a three-set victory for Herrero Cuesta at No. 1 singles – in a match that saw all three sets end in 6-3 scorelines.

Junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu leveled the dual at 2-2, also with a three-set win. Like Herrero Cuesta, he won the first set, 6-3, but found himself in a decisive set after dropping the middle frame, though regrouped to win the third set.

Graduate student Marvin Schaber put Denver within a point of victory with his fifth-straight singles win. He followed a similar formula to his first win of the week, capturing the first set, 6-3, before winning it in a tiebreak in the second set.

Fellow graduate student Anish Sriniketh clinched the dual for DU, matching his classmate in winning in straight sets. All five of his completed singles matches this season have been wins in two sets.

Senior Charlie Miller came back from a set down at No. 6 singles but ultimately dropped a tight 10-point tiebreak in place of the third set to give the day's final point to Utah State.
