Denver Women’s Tennis Sweeps Utah, 4-0

Denver extends Power-5 win streak to four, collects fifth sweep of 2024 season

DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team (7-2, 0-0 Summit) used its third sweep of the season to collect a 4-0 win over Utah on Friday at Denver Tennis Park.

It marked Denver's fourth-consecutive win over a Power-5 team in 2024 and was the team's first sweep against a Power-5 opponent since a 4-0 win over Washington State on April 5, 2021.

Doubles:
Denver took the early lead by winning the doubles point and dropping just five games across the two completed matches. DU's No. 1 team of graduate student Britt Pursell and junior Andrea Burguete Beltran captured their third win in four matches with breaks for 3-0 and 5-1 before closing it at 6-2. The sophomore duo of Caroline Driscoll and Louise Wikander clinched the point in No. 2 doubles despite losing a break lead midway through the match, finding a 5-3 lead and then sealing the win, 6-3.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Alice Otis fought back from a break down and were all level at 4-all when the match was abandoned.

Singles:
DU eased its way through singles, securing the sweep with straight-sets wins in Nos. 1, 3 and 4, and taking the first set across all six matches.

Driscoll put Denver up 2-0 overall with just three games lost at No. 4 singles – her third win of the season with three or fewer games surrendered. In both of her sets, she held 4-1 leads.

Beltran won her second match in a row, defeating the No. 59-ranked singles player in the country at No. 1 singles. In the first set, she claimed the crucial break late to go up, 5-3, before racing out to a 3-0 lead to open the second set. She added one more break before claiming the 6-2 win.

Wikander clinched victory for Denver at No. 3 singles with matching 6-3 sets. She took a 5-1 lead before handing one break back in the first set. The second set started with a quick 4-0 lead for the sophomore, though her opponent again got one break back late before Wikander closed it out.

In No.2 singles, Pursell turned a 3-0 lead into a 6-2 win in the first set. She was down an early break in the second but rallied back for 3-3 and was up a break late when the dual was clinched.

Otis followed her teammate with an easy first-set win after claiming an early break. She had dropped the second set and was about to start the only match to face a third set when they left the match unfinished.

Martinez de Velasco broke in her first return game and added a second break for 5-2 in the first set. Her second set was on serve at 5-all.
