DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones scored 21 points, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 73-64 at home Thursday.
Jones added five rebounds to her 21 point game to lead the Pioneers (7-20, 4-10). Emma Smith helped out with 14 points, six assists and five steals and Angelina Robles chipped in with eight points.
The Denver offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in 10 threes on 33 attempts. Smith was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining four treys in the contest.
Denver forced 14 South Dakota State turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Smith's five steals led the way for Denver.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Denver went on a 7-0 run with 6:22 left in the first quarter to take a 7-5 lead. The Pioneers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-11.
The Pioneers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-26 halftime deficit.
South Dakota State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 50-33 advantage before Denver went on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Robles, to trim its deficit to 50-44 with two seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
South Dakota State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 62-51 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jones' three, to shrink the deficit to 62-57 with 4:44 to go in the contest. South Dakota State responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-64. Denver fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
