DALLAS – The No. 27-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (7-4, 0-0 Summit) finished February with another road match against a nationally-ranked team, falling 4-0 to No. 37-ranked SMU on Saturday afternoon.
Doubles:
Denver started strong in doubles with its No. 1 team of graduate student
Britt Pursell and junior
Andrea Burguete Beltran claiming a 6-2 win over the nation's No. 50-ranked team. It was the duo's third win in its last four matches, each time dropping two or fewer games in the match.
After SMU took the No. 3 match, the doubles point came down to a tiebreak on Court 2 with the Mustangs sneaking out a 7-4 win.
Singles:
Southern Methodist moved within a point of the win with victories in the top two singles matches and eventually clinched the dual at No. 5 singles, though DU put up fights on the remaining three courts. Sophomore
Caroline Driscoll moved up to the No. 3 slot for just the second time this season, holding a set and a break lead, and was just a game away from the win.
Both sophomore
Louise Wikander and freshman
Karsyn Evans rebounded after losing their first sets to force deciders in their matches at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively. Wikander claimed the opening game of the third set, and Evans' had not started when the dual had been clinched, leaving their matches unfinished.
