DU Men’s Tennis Tops UTSA, 5-2

Denver completes home-opening weekend with fourth-straight win to start 2024

DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team (4-0, 0-0 Summit) concluded its first 2024 weekend at home with a 5-2 over UTSA on Sunday at Denver Tennis Park.

DU again won the doubles point and eventually took a 3-1 overall lead before clinching the match at 4-2 and adding an extra singles victory to finish the day.

Doubles:
UTSA held the early advantage after winning the No. 1 doubles match, but DU took the point with wins on the other courts. The new DU team of senior Peter Sallay and sophomore Raffaello Papajcik kept Denver alive in doubles with their 6-4 win, setting up senior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and junior Rikuto Yamaguchi to clinch the doubles point after breaking late on Court 2.

Singles:
The Roadrunners again jumped out to a lead in singles, taking the No. 5 match in straight sets to level the team standings at 1-1. DU graduate student Marvin Schaber regained the lead for Denver with his third-straight win at No. 3 singles. He easily took the first set, 6-1 – giving him a three-set streak of 6-1 wins at singles dating back to Friday's match – before collecting a 6-4 second set.

Herrero Cuesta moved to 4-0 on the season at No. 1 singles with his third two-set win in a row and dropping just five games in total.

UTSA pulled within a point of Denver following a win in No. 4 singles, but DU clinched the dual with another straight-sets win, this time from graduate student Anish Sriniketh in the No. 6 slot – his third time playing a match to its conclusion this season, winning all three.

The teams played out the final singles match in a 10-point tiebreak in place of the third set at No. 2 singles. Junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu rallied from a set down to take the second set, 6-4, before facing match points against him in the breaker. Again, he fought back to level the tiebreak, eventually taking the lead following a change of ends and winning it, 12-10.
