Denver Takes on Sixth-Seeded Omaha in Summit Semis Monday

The Pioneers will look to punch their first ticket to a conference final since 2005

DENVER  – The seventh-seeded University of Denver men's basketball team will take on sixth-seeded Omaha in the second Summit League Semifinal on Monday night inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Monday's game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on Midco Sports Network, the Summit League Network and 104.3 The Fan HD3.

The winner of Monday night's semifinal will take on the winner of South Dakota State and St. Thomas in the Summit League Championship on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. MT on CBS Sports Network.

SERIES HISTORY:
Omaha holds a 13-11 lead in the all-time series, but the Pioneers won the only previous Summit League Tournament game between the two programs, a 78-70 quarterfinal victory for Denver in the 2016 edition of the tournament. Omaha won the last meeting in the Mile High City on January 27, but the Pioneers won the two meetings before that, including a 95-80 victory in Baxter Arena in December.

LAST TIME OUT:
Tommy Bruner led the Pioneers with 16 points, Isaiah Addo-Ankrah hit his third game-winning three-pointer in the final six seconds of a game this season and Pedro Lopez-Sanvicente blocked Kansas City's attempt at its own winner in a 61-60 Pios win on Saturday night in the second quarterfinal at the Denny. DENVER IN THE SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT:
The Pioneers 4-8 all-time in the Summit League Tournament, including 2-7 as the underdog. Prior to Saturday night, Denver's last win came in double overtime against Oral Roberts by a count of 90-88 in the 2018 Summit League Quarterfinal. The Crimson and Gold's two other wins in the tournament came against Omaha (2016 quarterfinal) and South Dakota (2014 quarterfinal). Denver is 0-3 in the semifinal round of the Summit League Tournament.

In conference tournaments in the Division I era overall (Sun Belt, WAC and Summit League), the Pioneers are 13-21 in the postseason, including 6-15 as the underdog. Denver is 1-7 in the semifinal round overall with the program's lone trip to the championship game coming in the Sun Belt Conference in 2005.

BRUNER LEADS DENVER IN NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS:

  • Tommy Bruner ranks first in the country in points per game (24.2), sixth in free-throws made (204), third in field goals made (248), 81st in assists (139) and 91st in three-point field goals made (76).
  • Touko Tainamo ranks 78th in rebounds (251),and is also tied for 84th nationally in double-doubles with eight.
  • Isaiah Carr ranks 41st in the country in blocked shots (57).
  • Denver is 17th in the country in free-throw attempts per game (23.5) and 14th in free-throw makes per game (17.4).
  • As a team, the Pioneers are 22nd in scoring offense (81.9) and 41st in turnovers per game (10.2).
  • Bruner was held without a point in Denver's loss at St. Thomas, missing most of the second half. The game snapped a streak of 32-straight games in double figures for the fifth-year senior.

TOMMY TIME:

  • Bruner scored 68 of 92 points in the second half or overtime in a three-game stretch for the Pioneers from Dec. 31-Jan. 6.
  • Bruner scored 21 of his 27 points against Northern Colorado on January 6 after the intermission (78%).
  • After an 11 point first half on January 25 vs. South Dakota, Bruner scored 24 in the second half and 14 in the two overtime sessions to lead Denver to a 2OT win 111-110.
  • On January 30, Bruner was named one of five Oscar Robertson Trophy Players of the Week for his performance vs. South Dakota.
  • Bruner scored 30 of his 41 in a win vs. NDSU in the 2nd half (2/17).
  • Through games played Feb. 28, Bruner ranked first in the country in points in the last five minutes and in overtime (94).
  • In the Summit League Quarterfinal win, all 16 of Bruner's points came in the second half.

CAREER RECORDS: POINTS: Bruner 10th (1284), 23 behind Nate Rohnert (1307) for 9th. Tainamo 14th (1084), 16 behind Rob Lewis for 13th. FREE THROWS: Bruner is 2nd with 350, 29 behind Nate Rohnert for the record. REBOUNDS: Tainamo is 4th (619), 7 behind Wahhab Carter for 3rd.

SINGLE SEASON: POINTS: Tommy Bruner passed Yemi Nicholson (2005-06) for the modern DI record in a season on Feb. 8 at South Dakota. On Feb. 16 vs. North Dakota, Bruner passed Matt Teahan (1978-79) for the all-time record. Bruner sits at 776. FIELD GOALS: Bruner is 1st (248), passing Yemi Nicholson on Feb. 29 vs. Kansas City. FREE THROWS: Bruner broke Nate Rohnert's DI record on Feb. 1 and Vince Boryla's (1948-49) all-time record on March 9 for free-throws made (currently has 204). REBOUNDS: Tainamo has 251 boards for 4th-most, 10 behind Yemi Nicholson (2004-05) for 3rd. ASSISTS: Bruner has 139 dimes for fourth, 7 behind Nate Rohnert for third. BLOCKS: Isaiah Carr became the fourth different Pio to record 50 blocks in a season, currently sitting at 57, good for seventh-highest in a season, 9 blocks behind Eric Dow (1998-99) for 6th.
