[4/4] Denver Improves to 5-0 with Win over Le Moyne

Michael Lampert nets his second hat trick and JJ Sillstrop puts up another five-point night as Pios run away in the second half

DENVER – The [4/4] University of Denver men's lacrosse program outscored Le Moyne 10-1 in the second half to pull away from the Dolphins and improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2016 with a 15-6 win on Saturday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

KEY PERFORMANCES:
Michael Lampert led the Denver offense with a hat trick to go with a helper for a four-point night. JJ Sillstrop had another five-point night on two goals and three assists. Joshua Carlson and Cody Malawsky each had a pair of goals to round out Denver's multi-goal scorers. Denver had 10 different players score on the night and 12 different Pioneers recorded at least a point.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, Denver had 11 caused turnovers, led by a career-high four CTs for AJ Mercurio to go with four ground balls. Jimmy Freehill and Ryan Giles had two CTs apiece to round out the multi-CT performances on the night.
 
NOTES:
Denver improved to 173-31 with Matt Brown on staff when scoring double-digits.
The Pioneers improved to 121-25 at home since Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium opened in 2005.
Denver is 5-0 for the first time since starting 7-0 in 2016.
The Pioneers conceded their first goal of the season while a man down.
Denver had 10 different players score for the second-consecutive game and the 29th time since Matt Brown has been on staff.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter:
For the first time this season, Denver gave up the first goal with the Dolphins scoring on their first and the second possession of the game to take an early lead. Sillstrop quickly responded to even things at 1-1.
 
Lampert gave Denver its first lead of the day with his fifth of the season to make it 2-1 with 3:32 to play, but Le Moyne tied things back up on its next possession going into the quarter break.
 
Second Quarter:
The Dolphins took their second lead of the game on the man-up to make it 3-2 to open the quarter. Mic Kelly's first of the night quickly evened the score for a third time.
 
OIlin Stanat put Le Moyne back in-front with 9:12 to play in the half. Lampert's second of the day made it 4-4 before he assisted a Joshua Carlson laser to put Denver's noses back in-front with 3:11 to go in the half. Le Moyne scored on its final possession of the opening half to send the teams into the locker room at 5-5.
 
Third Quarter:
Denver turned up its level of play in the third quarter, outscoring Le Moyne 6-0 in the period. The Pioneers out-shot the Dolphins 19-3 and 9-0 on goal.
 
Carlson got the quarter started with his second of the night off a feed from Sillstrop to give Denver the lead back for good. Casey Wilson picked up a rebound after AJ Mercurio rattled the post and Wilson got his second goal in as many games to double the advantage.
 
Sillstrop's second of the night gave Denver a three-goal advantage. Cody Malawsky scored a pair of goals to end the quarter sandwiched around Lukas Klokiw's second of the season to stretch the Denver lead to 11-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter:
Lampert completed his second hat trick of the season to make it 12-5 and Richie Connell converted on the man-up to extend Denver's run to an 8-0 run before both teams changed goalies with the score at 13-5 with 6:45 to go.
 
The Dolphins scoring drought ended with 5:55 to go in the fourth to trim the Denver lead to seven.
 
Willem Albert got the first goal of his career with 1:37 to go to push the lead back out to eight and Cade Eldred made it a nine-goal game. 
 
UP NEXT:
Denver will close out the three-game homestand next Sunday when the Pioneers welcome nationally-ranked Yale to PBLS. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. MT on Altitude TV, Pioneer Vision and 104.3 The Fan HD3.
